Keklik,
diğer kuşların yumurtalarını çalan hilebaz kuş.
Keklik başka kuşların yumurtalarını çalar ve
onlara kuluçkaya yatar, ancak bundan hiçbir kazanımı olmaz,
yavru kuşlar gerçek annelerinin sesini duyar duymaz ona uçarlar.
Yumurtaları çalan keklik ruhları onları yaratandan çalan
şeytan gibidir.

Roma stili süslemelerde - örneğin Silos'taki arkadlı
avlunun güney galerisinde - çok sık görülen bir hayvandır.
Pinedo, Aristo, Theophratus, Pliney ve diğer antik dönem ve
ortaçağ yazarlarının hepsinin kekliğin tipik alışkanlığı
hakkında söyledikleri şeyler olduğunu not etmiştir.
Bu, St. Jerome tarafından kısaca şöyle ifade edilmiştir:
'Aynı kekliğin yumurtlaması ve sonra da asla onun peşinden
gelmeyecek olan yavru kuşlara kuluçkaya yatması gibi, hakkı
olmayan servete konan kâfir insan da bu serveti en istemediği anda
arkasında bırakmak zorunda kalacaktır." Kekliğin
sembolize
ettiği şeyi vurgulayan fikir budur. Diğer bir sembolik işlevi
ise kuşun aldatma kapasitesinden gelmektedir. St. Ambrose'un sözleriyle:
'Adını perdendo (kendini kaybetmek) kelimesinden alan ve İbranice
adı kore (çağırmak ve duyurmak) olan Keklik sesiyle
kalabalıkları baştan çıkartan Şeytan'dır.'

Partridge, a deceitful bird that steals other birds' eggs. The partridge steals the eggs of other birds and hatches them, but she gains nothing from this, for as soon as the young birds hear the voice of their true mother they fly to her. The partridge stealing eggs is like the devil, who steals souls from their creator.

The partridge is very common in Romanesque ornamentation—in the southern gallery of the cloister at Silos, for instance. Pinedo has noted how Aristotle, Theophrastus, Pliny and other ancient and mediaeval writers all have something to say about the characteristic habit of the partridge, succinctly expressed by St. Jerome as follows: ‘Just as the partridge lays eggs and hatches young birds who will never follow it, so the impious man possesses wealth to which he is not entitled, and which he must leave behind when he is least inclined.’ It is this idea that underlies the symbol of the partridge. Another symbolic func-tion comes from the bird’s capacity for deception.

the words of St. Ambrose: ‘The partridge, taking its name from the word
perdendo and in Hebrew called kore (to call and shout), is
Satan
tempting the multitudes with his voice.'
